Assessing risk key to Aaron Rodgers' return

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- There still isn't a solid timeline on quarterback Aaron Rodgers' return, and Packers coach Mike McCarthy already has named Scott Tolzien as this week's starter against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Rodgers But Rodgers gave some insight into what the team doctors are thinking about his broken collarbone during an appearance Monday on the show "Packers Live with Larry McCarren" on WGBA-TV, the local NBC affiliate.

“I'm going to be back when I'm ready, when there's very low risk of re-injuring that,” Rodgers said. “Obviously, if you have another blow like I had, a displacement of the collarbone could be 3-5 months of rehab. That's not what we want.”

Still, Rodgers said he knows the Packers' season could hinge on his return.

“At the same time, we're 5-5 and we might need a little jolt here at some point,” Rodgers told McCarren, a former Packers center and the analyst on the team's radio broadcasts.

Earlier on Monday, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Rodgers' return will be a collective decision between the medical staff and Rodgers.

“Really, I don't make medical decisions,” McCarthy said. “That will be no different with Aaron Rodgers. We all know he wants to play; he wants to play as soon as he can. But those are big decisions when you put a player back on the field. When everybody's confident, then that's when it will happen.”
